From the colonial era, where Whiskey had an important economic and social function in the fabric of the community, to the Whiskey Rebellion, through Prohibition and into modern times spirits have played a sometimes controversial but always fascinating role in our nation’s history. The Gateway to the American Whiskey Trail ^sm is the newly-reconstructed George Washington’s Distillery at Historic Mount Vernon (VA), which is now open to the public from April through October, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. George Washington's Distillery is the only site in North America that can demonstrate 18th-century distilling from seed to barrel.
