Tobacco Company Pulls Promotion Condoning Excessive Drinking That Attorneys General and Liquor Industry Condemned

Washington, D.C. – The Distilled Spirits Council today said R.J. Reynolds made the right decision to pull a marketing promotion for tobacco that included cocktail coasters condoning excessive alcohol consumption and including unauthorized use of the organization’s member company liquor brands. “We understand that RJR has made the decision to stop the promotion and we think it was the correct one,” said Distilled Spirits Council President Peter Cressy. “This promotion was just plain wrong. Including our company brands without authorization was outrageous. It would have been a complete violation of our Code of Responsible Marketing Practices, which prohibits any promotion of excessive drinking, if our companies had produced it.” Cressy added, “We strongly supported the efforts of the Attorneys General from New York, California and Maryland to get RJR to stop.” R.J. Yesterday, the Council released a Dec. 1 letter from its Code Review Board to the Attorneys General of New York, Maryland and California condemning the tobacco promotion and urging its immediate halt.
