RHODE ISLAND HOUSE VOTES TO ALLOW SUNDAY PACKAGE STORE SALES - Senate to consider legislation next week

April 29, 2004 08:00 PM
PROVIDENCE – The Distilled Spirits Council today commended the Rhode Island House of Representatives for passing legislation that will allow consumers to buy distilled spirits seven days a week, year-round. “We are hopeful that Rhode Island will become the next state to further modernize its marketplace,” said Peter Cressy, President of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS). “Final passage of this legislation will bring consumers more convenience, small business owners more business and the state more revenue.” The state last year moved to allow Sunday spirits sales during the December holiday season, which proved popular with the state’s consumers. Since then, Massachusetts has moved to allow year-round Sunday sales, which could drain state revenue from Rhode Island unless it also approves seven-day sales. Within the past year, the Sunday sales bans have been rolled back in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, and other states across the country. More states, such as neighboring Connecticut, are considering similar repeals. The Rhode Island Senate is expected to consider the legislation next week.
