OVER 50 REPORTERS ATTEND DISTILLED SPIRITS COUNCIL NYC RUM TASTING

August 4, 2003 08:00 PM
New York City – Calling Rum one of America’s favorite and most mixable spirit categories, the Distilled Spirits Council hosted a tasting of premium dark and flavored rums for over 50 journalists and Wall Street analysts at the newly renovated Django Restaurant in midtown Manhattan. Journalists from Woman’s Day to The Wall Street Journal sampled from more than 25 different rums, many of which have only recently been made available to the public. Other attendees included representatives from The Daily News, Dow Jones, Financial Times, and Reuters and magazines such as Fitness, Health, Lucky Magazine, Men’s Journal and Popular Science, among others “Rum is hot! It represents the second fastest growing spirits category in the United States,” said Frank Coleman, Council Senior Vice President, “and there have been more rum products introduced in the past two years than at any time over the past 30 years. “Flavored rums such as Coconut, Vanilla, and Orange are particularly hot this summer with master mixologists across the country exploring fantastic flavored cocktails,” Coleman added, noting that flavored Rums now account for over 35% of the category. Also, rum is the only major spirit category in which women make up a larger percentage of the consumers. In 2002, 17.9 million 9-liter cases of rum were sold in the United States, generating nearly $1.4 billion in revenue for distillers, a solid 5% increase over the previous year. At the tasting, featured rums included: Appleton Estate Jamaica Rums / Bacardi 8 Reserve Rum and Bacardi Coco Rum / Beachcomber Flavored Rums / Captain Morgan Spiced Rum and Captain Morgan Private Stock / Cruzan Diamond Estate and Cruzan Single Barrel Estate Rum / Kuya Fusion Rum and Malibu Caribbean Rum / Ronrico Silver and Ronrico Vanilla Rum among others. In addition to sampling various rum brands, José Almonte, Django’s Beverage Manager, created three palette pleasers and thirst quenching drinks featuring vanilla rum with lime juice, pineapple and triple sec for what he is calling the Key Lime Martini. His hibiscus-yuzo cocktail with coconut rum over homemade coconut ice cubes will sure to be the next trend in beverage creations. Lastly, he steeped lemongrass and fresh ginger for a mixer with dark rum.
