WASHINGTON, DC –  Jodie Bernstein, a founding Outside Advisory Board member to the Distilled Spirits Council’s advertising and marketing Code, was named the 2008 recipient of the Council of Better Business Bureaus International Torch Award for Consumer Leadership at a ceremony last night at the National Press Club.

“Jodie lit the torch that has become the beacon for effective self-regulation,” said Distilled Spirits Council President Peter Cressy.  “Her lifetime achievements have left an indelible impression in the marketplace through the promotion of industry self-regulation and corporate social responsibility.”

Bernstein received the award for significantly advancing marketplace trust through her consumer advocacy initiatives and her outstanding leadership in the area of advertising self-regulation.

Currently with the Washington, D.C. law firm Bryan Cave, Bernstein served as Director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection from 1995 to 2001.  While at the FTC, she oversaw the FTC’s 1999 Report to Congress on alcohol advertising and self-regulation.  She also was the leading force in creating the National Advertising Review Council of the Better Business Bureaus, established in 1971, to review advertising copy to ensure that it is truthful and accurate.

Since 2003, Bernstein has served as one of three outside advisors to the Distilled Spirits Council Code of Responsible Practices for Beverage Alcohol Advertising and Marketing.  In this role, Bernstein provides guidance and pre-reviews advertisements upon request by member companies and serves as a tie-breaker if the Code Review Board cannot reach a decision on a particular complaint.

The Code, first adopted in 1934, has been pointed to as a model of self-regulation for other industries by the Federal Trade Commission, and has been commended on numerous occasions by regulators, industry watchdogs and the media.
