U.S.-Brazil Agreement Signed Recognizing Bourbon and TN Whiskey in Exchange for Recognition of Cachaca

WASHINGTON, DC – The Distilled Spirits Council called an agreement signed today by United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Brazilian Trade Minister Fernando Pimentel to officially recognize each countries native distilled spirits products “an historic event that is sure to contribute to further acceleration of trade in distilled spirits between the two countries.”

USTR: Korea Free Trade Agreement Effective March 15

WASHINGTON, DC – The Distilled Spirits Council today welcomed an announcement by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) that the Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) will enter into force officially on March 15, 2012, resulting in an immediate elimination of the 20% tariff on Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey imports and a gradual, five-year elimination of tariffs on other U.S. spirits products.

Distilled Spirits Industry Applauds Final WTO Ruling On Philippines' Discriminatory Spirits Taxes

WASHINGTON, DC – The Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS) today welcomed the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) final ruling that the Philippines’ excise tax on distilled spirits is discriminatory and in violation of WTO rules. Further, DISCUS urged the Philippine government to revise its excise tax structure immediately to comply with the ruling.
