Manchin Signs Bill Allowing West Virginia Package Stores Additional Hours of Operation

April 4, 2007 08:00 PM

Charleston, WV – Governor Joe Manchin yesterday signed into law a bill allowing West Virginia package stores two additional hours of operation per day, a move that will give adult consumers more choice and added convenience, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

“This move is a step in the right direction and will certainly provide adult package store customers with some much-needed convenience,” said David Wojnar, Vice President of the Distilled Spirits Council, whose organization aggressively supported the legislation.  “This legislation is especially important for West Virginia, since adult consumers are prohibited from buying spirits on Sundays – the second busiest shopping day of the week."

Senate Bill 712 allows package stores up to an additional 12 hours of operation per week.  The legislation will take effect June 8, 2007.

“Allowing stores to open an extra two hours a day is great for 21st-century consumers that need more time to fit shopping into their busy schedules,” said Wojnar.  “We applaud Governor Manchin and the state legislature for recognizing and taking action to satisfy the needs of today’s harried consumers.”
