Lifting Ban, Oklahomans Vote to Allow Package Stores to Open on Election Days

November 13, 2006 07:00 PM

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Package stores in Oklahoma will have the opportunity to remain open for up to thirteen additional days per year as a result of a state referendum allowing Election Day sales of beverage alcohol in package stores, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

Oklahoma Question 733, a ballot measure reversing an antiquated law prohibiting package stores from selling beverage alcohol on Election Days, passed last week by a 53 – 47 percent margin.

“The idea that package stores should be closed on Election Day is a notion from a different era,” said Council Vice President Dale Szyndrowski, whose organization was a member of an industry-wide coalition of retailers and producers who supported the measure.  “Oklahoma’s decision to modernize this law will not only bring customers added convenience – but also the state added revenue.”

Szyndrowski pointed out that of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, only ten states continue to place Election Day restrictions on package store operating hours.
