Standard Drinks Equivalence

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the federal government’s official nutrition policy of the United States, a drink is defined as 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits, 12 ounces of regular beer or 5 ounces of wine. Understanding that these standard servings of distilled spirits, beer and wine contain the same amount of alcohol is a critical aspect of responsible drinking. This fact, known as “beverage alcohol equivalence,” is taught by the federal government and numerous public health organizations and is included in the majority of state driver’s manuals.
