AWOL Machines

Alcohol without liquid (or AWOL) machines are devices that allow consumers to inhale alcohol by mixing it with pure oxygen. The marketers of AWOL have promoted this device as the "ultimate party toy" and as a way to reduce the effects of a hangover. The Distilled Spirits Council believes that this attempt to glorify reckless consumption sends a deleterious message and is unacceptable. Beverage alcohol, when consumed in moderation and responsibly by adults of legal drinking age, can be part of a normal healthy adult lifestyle choice.

  • In the past two years, legislation to ban AWOL machines was introduced in at least 32 states.
  • As of April 2007, twenty-two states had enacted laws to ban AWOL machines.

The members of the Distilled Spirits Council are committed to fighting the irresponsible consumption of beverage alcohol and urge all adults to consume our products in moderation. Restricting products that encourage reckless consumption of alcohol, such as the AWOL device, will help promote this goal of responsibility.
