GOVERNOR SIGNS 7-DAY LIQUOR SALES INTO LAW -- Law Marks Final End to Prohibition-Era Blue Law in New York

ALBANY – Under a provision in the state’s budget signed today by Gov. George Pataki, package store owners will now be permitted to sell alcohol products seven days a week – officially marking the end of the state’s Prohibition-era Blue Law. “The Sunday liquor sales Blue Law is finally history in New York,” said Distilled Spirits Council President Peter Cressy, whose organization has successfully lobbied to repeal Sunday sales bans in New York and other states. “Consumers can now buy fine spirits products when it fits into their schedule, not the government’s schedule.” Last year, legislation was passed in New York allowing liquor stores to open on Sundays if they closed another day of the week. The move proved popular with consumers and the retailers who decided to open on Sundays. According to an economic analysis by the Distilled Spirits Council, off-premise (package store) sales increased 6 percent in the year following Sunday sales, roughly double the 3.2 percent growth rate experienced in other states. “It makes good business sense to bring New York’s spirits marketplace into the modern era, where Sunday is now the second busiest shopping day of the week,” Cressy said. “Allowing seven-day liquor sales will bring convenience to consumers, boosts for local businesses and additional tax revenue for the state.” Many New York retailers are eagerly awaiting this change, said Steve Glamuzina, President of the Empire State Package Store Association. “Stores opening on Sunday have been very successful in boosting their sales over the past year,” Glamuzina said. “Now that they can open every day of the week, their businesses will thrive even more.” In the last two and a half years, 10 states have joined the growing list of states allowing Sunday sales, bring the total to 31. In New England, Connecticut is the only state with a Prohibition-era ban on Sunday sales.
