Gin’s Popularity is Back with American Consumers

New York, NY- The Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS) and The Gin and Vodka Association of Great Britain hosted a seated gin tasting led by spirits expert, Gary Regan and a spectacular gin cocktail demonstration by Audrey Saunders of the Pegu Club today at the New York Yacht Club. Over 70 journalists attended from Food & Wine, GQ and the Wall Street Journal to sample these excellent UK gins, learn about the unique flavor profile of gin and to see how versatile gin is for cocktails. “Gin consumption is on the rise again, and creative cocktails are part of the story,” said Frank Coleman, Sr. Vice President of DISCUS. “Another chapter of the Gin story is the rise of super premium products. Super-Premium brands drove growth in 2004, increasing 7.2% in both volume and revenue.” “The US market is extremely important to us,” said Edwin Atkinson, Director of the UK Gin and Vodka Association. “The U.S. imported 3.0 million cases in 2004 with an increase of 5.9% over 2003. Author and lecturer, Gary Regan explained to the audience about the greater appreciation that bartenders and adult consumers are beginning to have for the multifaceted elements of Gin. “The juniper base and citrus undertones are great flavors for cocktails,” he said. Master Mixologist Audrey Saunders noted that gin was a leading spirit in some of the best cocktails in history like the Pegu, Aviation and of course the Martini. For the event, she prepared fabulous new creations such as the Earl Grey MarTEAni and the Gin-Gin Mule. The tasting featured: Beefeater, Bombay Sapphire, Boodles, Plymouth, and Tanqueray gins. In addition to sampling gin cocktails, Executive Chef, Antonio Cinicola, incorporated the gins into some of the canapés including smoked salmon cured in gin and brown sugar and dry aged beef with a gin sauce, candied lime and ginger. EARL GREY MarTEAni 1 ½ oz. Earl-Grey Infused Gin ¾ oz. Fresh Lemon Juice 1 oz. Simple Syrup 1 small Egg White Measure all ingredients into a mixing glass.
