Distilled Spirits Council Showcases American Whiskeys in Growing Colombian Market

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States today announced that it is organizing a tasting seminar of fine U.S. whiskeys and a cocktail demonstration to highlight the mixability and versatility of U.S. whiskeys for local media and beverage industry executives in Bogota, Colombia on Wednesday, November 18th, 2015.

During the seminar, supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, participants will learn about the history of American Whiskey, how its natural and unique production process developed over the centuries, about the characteristics that distinguish it from whiskeys from other regions of the globe, as well as a cocktail demonstration featuring American Whiskeys.

“Premium Bourbons, Tennessee and Rye Whiskeys are experiencing significant growth globally because of their authentic heritage, their distinctive flavors and their versatility in cocktails,” said Distilled Spirits Council Senior Vice President for Public Affairs Frank Coleman. “We are excited to showcase the variety of flavors in American Whiskey and explain what distinguishes these from other whiskeys produced around the world.  We are grateful to the U.S. Embassy in Colombia and the U.S. Department of Agriculture for their support of this event.”

JP Fetherston, a rising star in the craft cocktail movement, will lead the tasting and cocktail demonstration, which will feature samples of a wide range of American Whiskeys, such as Jim Beam Straight Kentucky Bourbon, Maker’s Mark, Jack Daniel’s No. 7, Wild Turkey Bourbon 81, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel, among others. 

Fetherston added, “Whether served straight, over ice, or in simple, creative cocktails, these drinks are perfect for any occasion.  My goal is to educate the beverage trade in Colombia on the benefits of including American Whiskeys in their cocktail programs.”

The Colombian market presents an important growth opportunity for American spirits producers.  Between 2009 and 2014, U.S. distilled spirits exports to Colombia have experienced steady growth, rising 272% from $617,841 to $2,324,232.  The growth is due, in part, to the important commitments established under the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement which was implemented in May, 2012.
