November 14, 2001 07:00 PM
WASHINGTON, DC, Nov. 15, 2001 – Distilled Spirits Council President Peter H. Cressy recently told officials at a U.S. Department of Education conference about the distilled spirits industry’s initiatives to combat alcohol abuse on college campuses through a series of national and regional conferences. “Public-private partnerships are an essential component of any program to combat alcohol abuse,” said Cressy, the only speaker from the beverage alcohol industry at the event. “We have been working for years to fight alcohol abuse on the college campus and helping to identify programs that have a track record of working.” The conference, sponsored through the U.S. Department of Education’s Safe and Drug Free Schools Program, focused on alcohol abuse and drug prevention in higher education. Dr. Cressy spoke at a session entitled, “A Model Conference: Campus/ Community Teams Developing Sustainable Plans to Reduce Campus Alcohol Abuse,” during which he discussed the spirits industry’s involvement in developing and sponsoring national and regional college conferences. He described the development and outcomes of “The American Campus and Alcohol” national conference sponsored by the Distilled Spirits Council and five universities at which 34 universities attended with their campus-community teams. He also discussed the industry’s participation in two recent regional conferences in Louisiana and Texas. He spoke about the importance of campus and community partnerships, developing a sustainable plan and ways to evaluate effectiveness. “We were pleased to represent the beverage alcohol industry at this conference,” said Cressy. “It is important for those in government and academia to know that we are an active and willing partner.” CONTACT: Lisa Hawkins / Frank Coleman Telephone: (202) 682-8840 SCROLLER Publication Name: Publication Author:
