Washington, D.C.– The Distilled Spirits Council and The Smithsonian Associates announce the Winter 2003 educational program exploring the history of distilled spirits, through lectures and tastings. Offered through The Smithsonian Associates Resident Associates program, the five-session course will commence Thursday, February 6th at 6:30 p.m. with a course addressing the history of vodka and gin. Each course will feature distilled spirits industry experts as guest lecturers, as well as offering a tasting of distilled spirits products. “The history of distilled spirits is part of the cultural fabric of nations throughout the world,” said Dr. Peter Cressy, President and CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council. “It is an honor to partner with The Smithsonian Associates in order to bring this educational series to the public and share some of our industry’s rich heritage.” Among the distinguished industry experts presenting during the “A History and Tastings of Distilled Spirits,” are Scott Reid, Global Marketing Director, Finlandia Vodka Worldwide and Gary Regan, Master Mixologist and co-author of The Book of Bourbon, Feb 6; Mike Greisser, Vice Chairman, McCormick Distilling, Feb 13, on rum and tequila; Maker’s Mark CEO Bill Samuels and Chris Morris, Master Distiller, Brown-Forman Beverages Worldwide, Feb 27, on Bourbon and Whiskies; and Evan Cattanach, Schieffelin & Somerset Director of Scotch Knowledge, March 6, on Scotch Whisky. The course will be taught in a relaxed and informal atmosphere at The Commons Dining Room, Smithsonian Castle, 1000 Jefferson Drive, SW, in Washington, D.C. Each session offers representative tastings from the evening’s lectures paired with hors d’oeuvres. The program is open to adults over the age of 21 and the cost for the entire program is $115 for Resident Associate members and $160 for the general public.
