Distilled Spirits Council and Tequila Regulatory Council Host Warm Up for Cinco de Mayo New York Tequila Event

Washington, D.C. – The Distilled Spirits Council and the Tequila Regulatory Council hosted a May 1, Warm Up for Cinco de Mayo for the U.S. lifestyle and business media at the elegant New York Mexican restaurant, Pampano, the groups announced today. The event featured a tasting of 18 premium and super premium Tequilas, and the cuisine of Pampano’s award-winning chef, Richard Sandoval. Nearly 70 reporters and editors from a wide range of magazines, newspapers and news services attended the festive event. “Given the strong growth in consumer preferences for high-end tequilas, it was timely to present the best of the category to the New York-based business and lifestyle media,” said Frank Coleman, Senior Vice President of the Distilled Spirits Council, the organization representing major producers and marketers of distilled spirits in the United States. Judith Meza-Nixon, U.S. Representative of the Mexico-based Tequila Regulatory Council, noted: “The USA is Mexico's largest export market of Tequila and it is therefore vital for us to expand the knowledge and understanding of the product, educate the trades and consumers, promote the image and prestige of tequila as well as pursue protection of the Appellation of Origin.” Among the featured tequilas at the event were: Cazadores; El Charro; Cuervo Reserva de la Familia; Cuervo Tradicional; Don Eduardo; Don Julio; Hussongs; Montezuma; Sauza Conmemorativo; Tequila Corazon de Agave; El Tesoro; Tres Generaciones; and Viuda de Romero. Participating companies included: Allied Domecq Spirits & Wine USA, Inc; Bacardi U.S.A. Inc.; Barton Incorporated; Brown-Forman Corporation; Diageo; Jim Beam Brands Company; McCormick Distilling Company, Inc., Pernod Ricard USA; and Sidney Frank Importing Co., Inc. In addition to the Tequila tastings and the menu of Sandoval’s seafood-themed hors d’oeuvres, the event highlighted a range of Tequila-based mixed drinks from the popular Margarita to the more traditional Paloma, and several of Pampano’s own creations. The Distilled Spirits Council and the Tequila Regulatory Council said that the partnership would continue on with a media distillery tour of the Jalisco region of Mexico later this year or early next year. The Tequila tasting follows other recent Distilled Spirits Council events such as last month’s super premium Vodka tasting at the Petrossian Caviar Bar for the New York media. The group also sponsors media tours of other distilling regions including Bourbon country and Scotland, in conjunction with the Scotch Whiskey Association.
