DISCUS Hosts Seminar and Tasting Featuring Super Premium American Distilled Spirits In China

CHINA–The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States is hosting a seminar and tasting of super premium American whiskeys, and other U.S. spirits for local importers, restaurant and nightclub owners, managers, bartenders and spirits buyers tomorrow at MOCA Caffé, at the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art. A similar event was held yesterday in Beijing, at the InterContinental Hotel.

The events -- celebrating the taste, heritage, and style of American distilled spirits -- begin with an exploration of the history of American whiskeys presented by Master Distiller Jimmy Bedford of the Lynchburg, Tennessee-based Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, America’s largest spirits export.

Bedford leads attendees through a tasting of many of the greatest brands from a variety of U.S. producers.  Participants are able to fully appreciate the complex flavors that are derived from the natural ingredients and the unique aging process of American Whiskeys.

“While the production of American Whiskey and Bourbon has been around since the 18th century, we have recently seen a re-birth in consumer interest in these products not only in the United States but across the globe,” said Bedford.  “As the sixth master distiller in the history of Jack Daniel’s, it certainly has been enjoyable for me to be a part of this movement and to be able to educate consumers around the world about these fine products.”

After the tasting, a mixology session highlights the style and sophistication of cocktails made with American distilled spirits.

The event concludes with a reception featuring American spirits and a number of signature cocktails.

“American distilled spirits such as Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey offer a wide variety of robust flavors,” said the Distilled Spirits Council’s Senior Vice President Frank Coleman.  “They’re a great addition to any hotel, restaurant, or bar beverage program precisely because of the versatility.  Whether served straight, over ice, or in simple, creative cocktails, these drinks are perfect for entertaining and are rapidly growing in popularity throughout Asia.”

  • In 2005, U.S. spirit exports to China totaled approximately $3.1 million. 
  • In 2006, they totaled $6.7 million, representing a 116% increase over the pervious year.
