75 years after Prohibition Repeal, only 15 states still impose archaic Blue Law

DENVER, CO – Colorado’s overwhelming majority of adults who have clamored for the convenience of Sunday alcohol sales have reason to cheer today as Governor Bill Ritter signed a bill repealing the state’s Prohibition-era ban on Sunday alcohol sales, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

“This is a terrific victory for consumer convenience, market modernization and free enterprise,” said Distilled Spirits Council President Peter Cressy, noting that 2008 marks the 75th anniversary of national Prohibition Repeal.  “For years now, consumers and newspapers across the state have urged the repeal of this outdated Blue Law.  Our congratulations to Senator Veiga and Representative Jahn for their leadership and hard work passing this bill, and to Governor Ritter for signing it into law.”

Senate Bill 82, authored by Senator Jennifer Veiga and Representative Cheri Jahn passed the Legislature on March 20 and was signed by Governor Ritter today at the Capitol surrounded by Sunday alcohol sales supporters.

Governor Ritter issued the following statement at the signing: “This is a law whose time has finally come.  The ban on Sunday sales was an antiquated law that long ago outlived its usefulness and relevance.  Everything we know about modern consumer demand says the people of Colorado want conveniences, options, and choices this law will bring.  This is about stepping into the 21st Century.”

Jeanne McEvoy, owner of Loveland’s Aspen Leaf Liquor and an outspoken Sunday sales supporter said: "I'm confident Sunday sales will boost my business.  I have already had dozens of new customers tell me they came to my store because they wanted to support a business owner who stood up for consumer convenience."

Colorado becomes the 35th state to pass Sunday spirits sales – the latest in a growing trend of states modernizing archaic alcohol laws.   Thirteen states, including Colorado, have passed Sunday sales laws since 2002.
