Christie's December 8th Auction Marks First Spirits Auction In New York Since Prohibition

November 28, 2007 07:00 PM

Auction Falls Three Days after 74th Anniversary of Prohibition’s Repeal

New York, NY – The first liquor auction since Prohibition in the Big Apple will launch on Saturday, December 8th—three days after the 74th anniversary of Prohibition’s repeal—at Christie’s Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

“This historic auction is a perfect opportunity for collectors and connoisseurs to bid on rare and extraordinary liquors,” said Council Senior Vice President Frank Coleman, whose organization lobbied in support of a law passed earlier this summer allowing spirits auctions.  "Christie's has put together a robust offering of fine distilled spirits from around the globe that will take place, appropriately, on the heels of the 74th anniversary of Prohibition’s repeal.”

Featured spirits in Christie’s December 8 Fine Wines and Spirits offering include: a rare bottle of 1926 Macallan—one of the most expensive whiskies in the world; a bottle of Cognac Grande Fine Champagne named for Impératrice Josephine 1811; the Napoleon Cognac of the legendary Halley's comet vintage of 1811; and, one of the first bottles of George Washington's Distillery Straight Rye Whiskey made in over 200 years by a team of America's leading master distillers in 2003.

New York became the 7th state to allow spirits auctions when Senate Bill 3606 passed the Senate 58-1 on June 19th and unanimously passed the Assembly the following day. Governor Elliot Spitzer signed the bill on August 15, 2007.

Other states that allow spirits auctions include: Arizona, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Texas and the District of Columbia.
