BERRY SOPHISTICATED -- Berry Flavors Add Pizzazz to Cocktail Favorites

With Autumn now upon us, a look back at Summer 2003fs gHot Listh shows that berry flavored cocktails emerged as the seasonfs hippest cocktail trend. Whether adding a twist to cocktail favorites like the Cosmopolitan or Mojito or inspiring countless new creations, berry cocktails packed a complex flavor that was unique, elegant, and irresistible. In the past year, several major brands introduced berry-infused spirits, including four new rums and three new vodkas in recent months alone. One expert says cranberry vodkas and raspberry rums are capitalizing on consumers taste for more intensely, fruit-flavored cocktails. gMany customers are looking for a depth of flavor in their cocktail that berry flavored spirits really deliver,h said Sean Adams, General Manager of 15 Ria, a hot Washington, D.C., nightspot. gThe quality of the berry-infused spirits that are being introduced today allows mixologists to create a refreshing drink thatfs elegant, appealing and can be enjoyed year-round.h According to research by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, there are currently more than 20 berry infused vodkas on the market that are helping to make vodka the top selling spirit in the United States. gThe spirits industry evolves with consumersf tastes, and today people are drawn to berry flavors,h says Patrick MacElroy, Director of Communications for the Council. gWith consumers seeking a more flavorful and sophisticated cocktail experience there has been a major increase in the demand for berry-flavored spirits and berry cocktails.h Here are several of the top signature berry cocktails from around the nationfs Capitol: The Blueberry Smash (15 Ria at the Washington Terrace Hotel, Washington, D.C.) 1.5 oz. citrus rum fresh mint leaves fresh blueberries crushed ice Muddle mint and blueberries, then add citrus rum and shake. Pour over crushed ice in a cocktail glass and garnish with blueberries. The Kurrant Affair (The Daily Grill, Washington, D.C.) 1.5 oz. raspberry vodka 1 oz. cranberry juice juice of one-half lime Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass. The Marion Berry (Lounge 201, Washington, D.C.) 1.25 oz raspberry vodka 2 oz cranberry juice .25 oz. blackberry liqueur Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.
